Welcome to Chilton! It’s the Lorelai’s first day at the new school, and besides Mr. Jack, people were not very welcoming. Headmaster Charleston’s secretary didn’t say hello, Paris and company were judgy at first sight, and Lorelai was forced to remove her coat even though she didn’t want to.
Honestly, I didn’t think there was anything wrong with Lorelai’s outfit. I also didn’t think that Lorelai needed to go in and meet Headmaster Charleston, as it is high school. But it did give us more of a glimpse into the dysfunctional relationship between Emily and Lorelai.
Some interesting tidbits from this episode include Luke attempting to fix the toaster. For those of you who have watched beyond episode 2, you may remember that Luke will try fixing the toaster in later episodes. He may need to invest in a more diner-like toaster. Also, the creepy clown pillow (as discovered in the I Am All In podcast) appears in this episode, and we meet the fabulous Tristan who insists on referring to Rory as Mary (right over my head, how about you)?
Other tidbits that should be mentioned is that Kirk showed up in this episode as someone else named Mick, and my favorite scene was the interaction between Lorelai and Luke when they were speaking about the stalker parent who showed up at the Inn to ask Lorelai out on a date. The sparks were already flying between Luke and Lorelai, and it had nothing to do with the broken toaster. There was also the scene at the very end of the episode when Rory and Lorelai walk by Luke’s Diner, and he comes out on the step and watches them walk away. Oh my Luke!
Finally the awards for my favorite doodads in season 1, episode 2 are:
The award for my favorite line in this episode is from Lorelai.
Lorelai: I had the fuzzy clock and it didn’t purr on time.
A tiny portion of this song was played in the teaser, but it was enough to make me want to hear more. My choice for favorite song in this episode is:
I’m the man who murdered love by XTC
Other songs featured in this episode:
I don’t know how to say goodbye by Sam Phillips
Favorite Inanimate Object:
Although the clown pillow has garnered a lot of attention, my choice for favorite inanimate object (and the reason I didn’t notice the clown pillow right away) is because of this fabulous piano. Um, where did they get it, and has it ever been played?
Food is a huge part of Gilmore Girls. They are always eating or talking about food. So, the award for favorite food goes to the lobster puffs that Rory and Headmaster Charleston were discussing.
This might be an unpopular opinion, but my choice for favorite outfit goes to Lorelai for her pink tie dye shirt and cut off jean shorts (oh, I can’t forget the brown boots because that would just be embarrassing 🙂
Favorite Pop Culture Reference:
So many to choose from, but I’m going with Louise for her ode to the Dixie Chicks.
Paris: Formerly of Stars Hollow High School.
Louise: Where’s that?
Paris: Drive west, make a left at the haystacks and follow the cows.
Louise: Ooh, a dixie chick.
